Teaching about saving $

As she is our first, it's hard to explain to her how money works. Not everyone is just givin money and its not always just going to be there when you need it. I know my kids think the AMT is this magic oversize candy dispenser that maybe if you hit all the buttons on it juuuussst right, you'll hit the jackpot! So lately Bobby and I have really been pushing the issue of McKenzie can earn money around the house. She can get it by doing her chores and at the end of the week. If she has made her bed, help set the table, put dishes in the sink and take her laundry into the laundry room she gets roughly $1.50. Now that may not sound like alot to you and me but 6 quarters to a 6 year old.... that's alot of gum from the grocery store! But we wanted to teach her not to just go and blow it either. If she saves it she can get something much bigger and better. Waiting is hard, I know! So the game is set that she collects her change into a jar and when its full she gets to go into the bank with daddy, just like an adult and deposit it by herself. I was shocked when she was so hooked on it! It was in fact a reward itself to do that! I know most parents don't think about but teaching your child about those small things now will be very beneficially in the future. Especially for now that when she goes in to deposit her moo-lah she forgets about it and is just ready to fill the jar again. I cant wait till she's 16 and has enough money in the bank to buy her own car!
